Freshly dropped is a food service that delivers fresh ingredients for you to prepare at home. They wanted to expand the app with recipes, where people can choose whether they want to order groceries through FD's service or if they want to get them themselves by doing groceries.
Is a design portfolio even a portfolio without a cooking app? I didn't think so, that's why I started my own project from a brief of fakeclients.com. I wanted to develop my design system skills and deliver a pixel-perfect solution.
After reading the brief carefully and using a tiny bit of imagination I created some job stories which I could then translate into a design. Of course, when doing this with real users, I would rather organize a workshop so that there are not so many assumptions. The red sticky notes are the 'must have' requirements, and the green ones are 'nice to have'.
I found this method very helpful as a starting point for my design.
I then translated some of the job stories into a few sketches to see how I can communicate the idea. I find sketching very helpful because I'm not focussing on any details, colors, graphics, etc. Just the idea and how it can be the most functional.
I then translated my sketches into digital wireframes. I did already choose a grid for this and made some components so that I could work faster and more neatly.
I made a simple brandbook with all the UI guidelines for buttons, colors, typography, logo's, grids, etc. I used this as a handheld for the final design phase. I've kept the branding simple but clean, modern, and fresh, just like the products of Freshly Dropped.
My UX-brain just had to add a cool feature to make the app a bit more innovative. I've added the voice control feature which allows the user to go to the next step of the recipe, set a timer, or let the app say the step of the recipe at loud. This feature can be very handy when the user has dirty hands and doesn't want to touch the phone for example, but also when someone is cooking but not near the phone and want to hear how many onions they need to put in the pan.
